Before Classical Gas became a cultural touchstone, there was this — Mason Williams' debut LP is a warm, witty, and wonderfully eclectic record that defies easy categorization. Folk-pop, orchestral instrumental, blues, and baroque-inflected acoustic guitar all share space across twelve tracks, produced by Mike Post and arranged by Al Capps with a full studio orchestra. The session roster is remarkable: James Burton and Al Casey on guitar, Larry Knechtel on bass and piano, Jim Gordon on drums, Tom Scott on woodwinds, and Gayle Levant on harp. The cover features Williams with his full-size photo of a Greyhound bus, now in the Manhattan Museum of Modern Art collection. Vinyl and sleeve show visible age and handling wear but remain a solid vintage copy. Visual grading only; not play tested.
