A richly detailed French cast-iron desk inkwell dating to approximately 1890-1910. This compact writing accessory features an integrated pen rest, a square glass ink insert and a hinged cover.
Across the surface, tiny human figures, animals, birds and fruiting vines emerge from dense scrolling foliage. Traces of the original gold-toned bronzed finish remain on the raised details, creating beautiful contrast against the naturally darkened cast iron.
The underside is marked "D.L. Déposé," indicating a French registered design. A wonderfully atmospheric antique for a writing desk, library or collected interior.
Good antique display condition with age-related wear, oxidation and patina. The glass insert has visible chipping around its rim, residue and imperfections. Not tested for use with ink. Please examine all photographs carefully.
