ELP’s most ambitious studio statement — a double album structured as three solo sides, one per member, plus a collaborative fourth side featuring two of the band’s most celebrated recordings. Side A is Keith Emerson’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed with full orchestra, orchestral arrangements by Godfrey Salmon and Tony Harris, conducted by Godfrey Salmon. Side B is Greg Lake’s solo side, produced by Peter Sinfield, showcasing his acoustic folk-pop sensibility. Side C is Carl Palmer’s solo side, ranging from classical excerpts to jazz-funk to his signature drum showcase Tank. Side D is the band side: a landmark 9:38 arrangement of Copland’s Fanfare For The Common Man (featuring Joe Walsh, appearing courtesy of Asylum Records) and the 13:20 prog epic Pirates.
