The original first pressing of Santana’s landmark debut — one of the defining records of 1969 and the album that introduced Latin rock to a mainstream audience, released just weeks after their legendary Woodstock performance. Identifiable as an original pressing by the red “360 Sound Stereo” Columbia label and the erroneous songwriting credits on the labels — Evil Ways is incorrectly credited to Jimmie Zack (written by Sonny Henry), and Jingo is incorrectly credited; both errors were corrected on later pressings, making this a definitive first-press identifier. Recorded and mixed at Pacific Recording, San Mateo, California. Produced by Brent Dangerfield and Santana. Photography by Jim Marshall (the defining rock photographer of the era); psychedelic artwork by Lee Conklin. Engineered by Bob Breault and Eric Prestidge. Includes the original promotional inner sleeve (“Here’s How Records Give You More Of What You Want”). Nine tracks including Evil Ways, Jingo, and the 6:38 percussion showcase Soul Sacrifice — the track that stopped Woodstock. VG+/NM — an exceptional copy of the original pressing.
