Originally released in 1975, Rock ‘N’ Roll is Lennon’s tribute to the early rock and roll records that shaped him — Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Larry Williams — recorded during the “Lost Weekend” period (1973–74) in Los Angeles with Phil Spector. The album’s production history is one of the great sagas in rock: Spector co-produced the sessions then famously absconded with the master tapes after a falling-out with Lennon, delaying the release by nearly two years. Lennon eventually recovered the tapes and co-produced the final LP. Recorded at Record Plant (Los Angeles and New York) and A&M Studios. Engineered and remixed by Roy Cicala; assistant engineer Jimmy Iovine, who would go on to co-found Interscope Records and Beats by Dre. Mastered by Greg Calbi (Sterling Sound, NYC — one of the most respected mastering engineers in the business across five decades). Lacquer cut by John Lemay at Capitol Mastering. Photography by Jürgen Vollmer — one of the Hamburg-era photographers from the Astrid Kirchherr circle who documented the Beatles before they were famous; his cover image places this squarely in the Liverpool origin story. Production coordinated by May Pang, Lennon’s companion during the Lost Weekend and the period in which these sessions took place. Art direction by Roy Kohara. 1980 Capitol reissue on the green Capitol Dome label; pressed by Electrosound Group Midwest; mastered at Capitol Mastering and Master Cutting Room. NM vinyl; VG+ sleeve.
