Riptide (1985) was Robert Palmer’s commercial breakthrough — the album that delivered Addicted To Love (US #1) and I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On, both driven by the iconic Power Station-style production of Bernard Edwards, co-founder of Chic with Nile Rodgers and the bassist behind Le Freak, Good Times, and Diana Ross’s I’m Coming Out. Edwards brings the same locked-in funk-pop precision to Palmer’s sleek new wave pop, giving the album a sound that defined mid-80s sophistipop. Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas (Chris Blackwell’s Island Records studio, home to Grace Jones, Tom Tom Club, and the Rolling Stones). Mixed across five New York studios: The Power Station, Sigma Sound, The Hit Factory, Right Track Recording, and Electric Lady Studios. Mixed by Eric Thorngren; engineered by Jason Corsaro; mastered at Sterling Sound by Jack Skinner. Canadian Cinram pressing, manufactured by Island Records Of Canada Ltd. and distributed by MCA Records Canada. VG+/VG+ — light signs of careful play; minor shelf/edge wear to sleeve.
