Factory sealed Canadian Columbia pressing of Santana’s eighth studio album — one of the most commercially successful and musically cohesive records of their mid-1970s period. Recorded at Wally Heider Recording Studios, San Francisco; produced by David Rubinson; co-produced by Carlos Santana, Tom Coster, and Leon Ndugu Chancler; mastered by George Horn and Phil Brown. The core lineup here — Carlos Santana, Tom Coster on piano/organ/Moog/Rhodes/Clavinet, Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums and percussion, David Brown on bass, Armando Peraza on congas and bongos, and Greg Walker on lead vocals — delivers a tight blend of blues rock, jazz-fusion, and Latin funk. The album is best known for the closing instrumental Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile) (B3) — one of Santana’s most enduring compositions, a slow-burning, melody-driven instrumental that has become a touchstone of Latin rock guitar. Dance Sister Dance (Baila Mi Hermana) opens the album; Let Me, Gitano, and Let It Shine round out the tracklist. Artwork by Tadanori Yokoo, the celebrated Japanese graphic artist whose psychedelic poster work defined a generation of Japanese and international counterculture imagery.
