The second of Dylan’s three gospel albums and the direct follow-up to Slow Train Coming (1979) — recorded at the same studio with the same core production team: produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Alabama. The rhythm section is deepened here with Jim Keltner on drums — one of the most recorded session drummers in history, a regular for John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and countless others — replacing Pick Withers from the previous LP. Keyboards by Spooner Oldham, the Muscle Shoals session legend whose playing defined the sound of countless Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Percy Sledge recordings. Guitar by Fred Tackett (Little Feat). Background vocals by Clydie King, Mona Lisa Young, and Regina Havis (also on Slow Train Coming). Mastered by Bobby Hata at Amigo Studios, Burbank, supervised by Paul Wexler. Canadian pressing with a fully domestic production chain: lacquer cut, mastered, and pressed at the Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Don Mills, Ontario; printed by Shorewood Packaging Corp. of Canada (bilingual English/French back cover and label). Released with a printed inner image/credits sleeve. VG+/VG+ — light signs of careful play; minor shelf/edge wear to sleeve.
