A smooth fusion/jazz-funk LP from alto saxophonist David Sanborn, produced by Robert Margouleff — the synthesizer pioneer and co-producer of Stevie Wonder’s classic mid-70s run: Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness’ First Finale. The session assembled an elite cast: Marcus Miller on bass (later Miles Davis’s primary collaborator on Tutu and one of the most in-demand session bassists of the 1980s), Omar Hakim on drums (Weather Report, David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms), Michael Sembello on guitar (who would chart with Maniac from Flashdance the following year), Don Freeman on keyboards and synthesizer, and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion. Mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Precision Lacquer. Recorded across Warner Bros. Recording Studios (North Hollywood), George Massenburg Studios (Santa Monica), Mediasound (NYC), and Soundworks (NYC) on the 3M 32-Track Digital System; mixed to ½” Ampex ATR analog at The Record Plant — a hybrid digital/analog workflow that gives the album its characteristic clean but warm sound.
