ELO’s commercial breakthrough — the album that turned them from a cult progressive act into a mainstream pop force, reaching #5 in both the UK and US charts. Produced, written, and largely performed by Jeff Lynne, whose instrument credits on this record span lead, rhythm, slide, acoustic, and 12-string guitar, Wurlitzer EP200, and all lead and backing vocals; the musical vision here is almost entirely his. Recorded and mixed at Musicland Studios, Munich — Giorgio Moroder’s studio where ABBA, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, and the Rolling Stones also recorded; orchestra and choir at De Lane Lea Studios, Wembley; edits at Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles. Lacquer cut at RCA Studios, Toronto — a Canadian pressing detail confirmed by the U.A. Records Limited (Willowdale, Ontario) sticker on the back cover. Engineers include Mack (Reinhold Mack — who later produced Queen’s Flash, AC/DC’s For Those About to Rock, and engineered ELO’s subsequent records). Cover design, illustration, and photography by John Kosh — the art director who designed the Beatles’ Abbey Road sleeve. The album contains Telephone Line (A2 — US #7, UK #8), Livin’ Thing (B2 — US #13, UK #4), Rockaria! (A3), and Do Ya (B4 — originally by Roy Wood’s Move). Canadian U.A. Records Limited pressing with embossed cover and full colour inner sleeve with lyrics. NM vinyl; VG+ sleeve.
