One of Elton John’s most overlooked early recordings — the soundtrack to the 1971 Paramount film Friends, written with Bernie Taupin and recorded at Trident Studios, London with producer Gus Dudgeon and orchestral arranger Paul Buckmaster: the exact creative team behind Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across The Water. The result is a chamber-pop and orchestral score with a handful of full songs alongside instrumental variations and mood pieces, culminating in the 10:56 orchestral centrepiece Four Moods. Backing vocals by Lesley Duncan, Liza Strike, and Madeline Bell — among the most in-demand session vocalists in early 1970s London. Engineered by Robin Geoffrey Cable. Published by Dick James Music Ltd.; produced for Tuesday Productions Ltd. Light grey label pressing (distinct from the white label variant; labels read “Stereo” rather than “Stereophonic”). A couple of very minor surface marks; plays great.
