The breakthrough album that established Glen Campbell as a mainstream pop-country crossover star — released in late 1967 following the success of the title track, which became one of the most covered songs in American popular music. By The Time I Get To Phoenix (A1) was written by Jimmy Webb — at the time a 20-year-old songwriter newly arrived in Los Angeles; the song was rejected by several artists before Campbell recorded it, and it went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary (R&B) Song in 1968 and was named ASCAP’s Song of the Century in 1999 (the third most performed song in its history). Webb and Campbell’s creative partnership over the following years yielded Wichita Lineman (1968) and Galveston (1969), two of the most celebrated songs in the country-pop canon. Also includes Paul Simon’s Homeward Bound (A2 — originally a Simon & Garfunkel track from Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, 1966). Produced by Al De Lory — Campbell’s long-serving producer and pianist, who worked with him across his most commercially successful period and won two Grammy Awards for their collaboration on By The Time I Get To Phoenix (Album of the Year and Best Contemporary (R&B) Recording).
