One of Chapin’s most ambitious studio albums — nine tracks including the extended narrative suite The Mayor Of Candor Lied (A3, 8:21), which is among the most fully realized long-form storytelling pieces in his catalogue. Recorded at Elektra Sound Recorders, Los Angeles and The Hit Factory, New York; mixed at Phase One Recording Studios Ltd., Toronto; mastered at Masterdisk, New York by Bob Ludwig — one of the most significant mastering engineers in recorded music. Produced, arranged (strings and horns), and performed on keyboards and vocals by Steve Chapin (Harry’s brother and musical director). Harry Chapin plays 6-string and 12-string guitar and sings lead throughout; all songs written by Harry Chapin. The band: John Wallace (bass, vocals), Doug Walker (acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), Howie Fields (drums, orchestra bells). Additional musicians: Bobbye Hall (percussion — a celebrated Los Angeles session percussionist whose credits include Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Linda Ronstadt), Ron Evanuik (cellos), Buzzy Brauner (alto recorder). Additional vocals by Carolyn Dennis — who later became Bob Dylan’s backing vocalist and briefly his wife, and whose credits include Dylan’s Slow Train Coming and Saved. Photography by David Gahr — the celebrated folk and blues photographer whose archive documents the 1960s Greenwich Village scene, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger.
