A hard-rocking late-80s Iggy Pop album built around an unlikely but inspired pairing: produced by Bill Laswell — the avant-garde bassist and producer behind Herbie Hancock’s Rockit, Motörhead’s Orgasmatron, and a string of boundary-pushing projects across jazz, funk, and punk — with guitar throughout by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols. The combination gives Instinct a raw, muscular edge distinct from Iggy’s Bowie-era recordings: Cold Metal, High On You, Easy Rider, and the title track are the standouts. Recorded at Sorcerer Sound and BC Studio; mixed at Power Station and Platinum Island Studios by Jason Corsaro and Robert Musso; mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk (etched runouts; “MASTERDISK” stamped). Keyboards by Seamus Beaghen; CMI programming by Nicky Skopelitis (a regular Laswell collaborator); drums by Paul Garisto; bass by Leigh Foxx. Recorded by Martin Bisi and Robert Musso.
