Joni Mitchell’s most synth-saturated album and one of her most polarizing — a deliberate plunge into 1980s electronic production that divided her folk and jazz audience but stands today as a vivid document of how seriously Mitchell engaged with the era’s textures rather than merely tolerating them. Co-produced by Larry Klein (Mitchell’s bassist and husband, her primary collaborator across the Geffen years), Thomas Dolby — the UK synth-pop artist behind She Blinded Me With Science, who brought a distinctly new wave programming sensibility to the sessions — and Mike Shipley, who would go on to engineer and mix Def Leppard’s Hysteria and work extensively with Mariah Carey. The guest roster is exceptional: Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) duets with Mitchell on the opening track Good Friends; Don Henley (Eagles) and James Taylor also appear; Wayne Shorter — the jazz saxophonist and Miles Davis alumnus, and one of the most important composers in post-bop jazz — contributes; and Steve Lukather (Toto) plays guitar, one of the most recorded session guitarists in Los Angeles history.
