Marian Anderson (1897–1993) was one of the most celebrated contraltos of the twentieth century and a towering figure in American cultural history — her 1939 Lincoln Memorial concert, performed after the DAR barred her from Constitution Hall, drew an audience of 75,000. This is her landmark 1952 RCA Victor Red Seal recording of eleven African American spirituals, captured on May 14, 1952 with her longtime accompanist Franz Rupp. The program ranges from the deeply familiar — Deep River, Go Down, Moses, He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child — to lesser-known gems like Plenty Good Room, If He Change My Name, and O What A Beautiful City!. Liner notes by Jonathan Schiller. Original 10-inch mono LP pressing. Vinyl in great shape; some spine wear to sleeve. VG+/VG.
