Factory sealed. VOA (1984) is Sammy Hagar’s last solo studio album — recorded and released the year before he was recruited to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen, making it the literal bridge between his decade-long solo career and the next chapter of one of the biggest rock acts in the world. Produced by Ted Templeman, who had produced every Van Halen album from the debut through 1984 — the same producer who shepherded both halves of the Van Halen story, having first worked with Hagar on Montrose in the early 1970s. The connective tissue is remarkable: Templeman produced Hagar’s first major band, his last pre–Van Halen solo record, and all six Van Halen albums that preceded Hagar’s joining. Band: Bill Church on bass (who also played in Montrose alongside Hagar — a partial Montrose reunion), David Lauser on drums (Hagar’s longtime touring and recording drummer), Gary Pihl on guitar (who subsequently joined Boston), and Jesse Harms on keyboards. The lead track I Can’t Drive 55 became Hagar’s signature solo hit — a genuine MTV and AOR radio staple and one of the most recognizable hard rock singles of the era.
