Canadian MCA reissue of Steppenwolf’s definitive hits compilation, pressed by Quality Records Limited, Toronto (identified by the “Q” pressing plant mark in the runout) — one of the most important Canadian pressing plants of the era. Steppenwolf are the Canadian-American hard rock band formed in Toronto by John Kay, who relocated to Los Angeles but whose Canadian origins are central to their story. Born To Be Wild (A1) — written by Mars Bonfire (Dennis Edmonton) and used in Easy Rider (1969) — contains the lyric “heavy metal thunder,” widely cited as the first use of “heavy metal” as a musical descriptor and one of the defining rock songs of its era. The Pusher (B2) — written by Hoyt Axton, also featured in Easy Rider — and Magic Carpet Ride (B1) complete their three most enduring tracks. Sixteen tracks across both sides; equivalent to their 16 Greatest Hits compilation (DSX 50135, 1973) — same tracks and durations under a different title and catalogue number for the Canadian market. Vinyl is Near Mint; sleeve shows a small amount of wear.
