Sylvia (Sylvia Kirby Allen) was one of the most commercially successful female country vocalists of the early 1980s — her 1982 single Nobody reached #1 on the country chart and crossed to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, one of the strongest country-pop crossovers of the era. One Step Closer (1985) is her fifth RCA album, produced by Brent Maher — the Nashville producer who built his career producing The Judds (Wynonna and Naomi Judd) across their full run of Grammy-winning albums, and one of the defining voices in 1980s commercial country production. The album includes a duet with Michael Johnson — the Nashville singer-songwriter known for his own country-pop crossover hits including Bluer Than Blue — on I Love You By Heart. The duet format was a major commercial strategy in mid-80s country, and the pairing of two established RCA Nashville artists gives this track strong collector and listener appeal.
