The Grammy Award sweep album — Minute By Minute won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year at the 22nd Grammy Awards (1980); What A Fool Believes (A2) won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the same ceremony, making it one of the most decorated single releases in Grammy history. The album marked the full creative ascendancy of Michael McDonald within the Doobie Brothers — his blue-eyed soul keyboards and falsetto vocal style redefined the band’s sound from its earlier Tom Johnston-era rock to a sophisticated pop-soul direction. Produced by Ted Templeman — Warner Bros.’ most successful staff producer of the 1970s–1980s, whose credits include the Doobie Brothers across their entire run, Van Halen’s debut (1978), and Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey. Recorded at Warner Bros. Studios, North Hollywood; mixed at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood; engineered by Donn Landee — Templeman’s regular engineer, who also worked on the Van Halen debut. Includes significant session contributions: saxophone by Andrew Love — of the Memphis Horns, the horn section behind Al Green, Otis Redding, and dozens of classic soul recordings; trumpet by Ben Cauley — the sole survivor of the 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and most of the Bar-Kays; banjo by Herb Pedersen; fiddle by Byron Berline; harmonica by Norton Buffalo. Congas and vocals by Bobby LaKind. Canadian WEA Music of Canada pressing; pressed and lacquer cut at Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Don Mills, Ontario. Includes original inner lyric sleeve. Tiny bit of spine damage noted; vinyl and cover otherwise perfect.
