Original Canadian mono pressing — mono copies of this album are the original format and carry collector preference over the stereo pressing (COS-104) for this era of recording. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. (1967) was the Monkees’ third studio album and their second #1 on the Billboard 200, reaching the top spot within days of release and holding it for five weeks — released in November 1967 during one of the most competitive periods in pop history (the same quarter as the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour). Produced by Chip Douglas — who also plays bass and piano; Douglas was a member of the Modern Folk Quartet and produced this album and The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees for the band during their most creatively independent period. The album was the first Monkees record where the band members performed the majority of the instrumentation themselves. Synthesizer by Paul Beaver — the pioneering Moog synthesizer specialist who, with Bernie Krause as Beaver & Krause, was among the first musicians to use the Moog in pop and rock contexts; Daily Nightly (B4) features one of the earliest uses of a Moog synthesizer on a pop record, played by Micky Dolenz and Paul Beaver. Also features Doug Dillard on banjo — of the Dillards, the influential bluegrass group.
