The third album from New York sisters Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy Roche — and like their debut, produced by Robert Fripp, the founder and driving force of King Crimson. What makes this record exceptional is who Fripp brought into the studio: Bill Bruford on drums and percussion — the drummer for Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis, one of the most technically sophisticated percussionists in progressive rock — and Tony Levin on bass, the Chapman Stick virtuoso who anchored Peter Gabriel’s band and later rejoined Fripp in King Crimson. Fripp, Bruford, and Levin together constitute the King Crimson rhythm section, here providing the instrumental backbone for the Roche sisters’ close three-part harmonies and folk-inflected art-pop. The contrast — avant-garde prog musicians in service of intimate, wry domestic songwriting — is precisely what makes the Roches’ Warner Bros. albums so distinctive and collectible. Recorded by Craig Leon, whose production credits include the debut albums of the Ramones and Blondie. Lacquer cut by Joe Webster.
