There are no instruments, no session musicians, no band. The album is a pure document of Rundgren’s technological vision and a landmark in the intersection of voice, digital synthesis, and composition. Todd Rundgren is one of the most technically and creatively singular figures in American rock: founder of Utopia; producer of Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell (one of the best-selling albums in history); producer of Badfinger’s Straight Up (Baby Blue, Day After Day); producer of the New York Dolls’ debut; and the writer and performer of Hello It’s Me and I Saw The Light. His production discography also includes Patti Smith’s Wave, Hall & Oates’ War Babies, and Grand Funk Railroad’s We’re An American Band. A Cappella was visionary for its moment and remains a collector’s record for Rundgren enthusiasts, Utopia collectors, and students of early digital music technology.
