The direct follow-up to Eliminator — the album that sold over ten million copies and made ZZ Top one of the defining acts of early MTV — Afterburner (1985) continued the same synth-augmented blues-rock formula and went double platinum on its own. Produced by Bill Ham, ZZ Top’s longtime manager and producer who oversaw every album from the band’s debut through Recycler, giving them an unusual continuity between creative and business control that few major acts maintained. Engineered by Joe Hardy and Bob Ludwig. Features Sleeping Bag (US #1), Stages, Rough Boy, and Velcro Fly — all significant MTV-era singles with the band’s signature video aesthetic. Cover and label illustration by Barry Jackson; art direction by Jeffrey Kent Ayeroff (Warner Bros. Records’ creative director through the 1980s, responsible for dozens of the label’s most recognizable album packages) and Jeri McManus. Black printed inner sleeve. All tracks written by Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard. Canadian Cinram pressing (CR in runouts), manufactured and distributed by WEA Music Of Canada Ltd.
